Foundation Application - How to Get a Flawless, Fresh Face

!±8± Foundation Application - How to Get a Flawless, Fresh Face

If you've ever seen someone who has had their foundation professionally applied by a makeup artist who knows their stuff when it comes to the ins and outs of applying foundation to the skin, then you'll probably think that person is naturally blessed with flawless skin. That's the kind of difference it can make between incorrectly and correctly applying your foundation. Not only that though, you do also have to choose the right product for your skin.

If, for example, you buy a brand that just doesn't cover well, or that is not meant for your skin type, then you may be defeating the purpose of wearing foundation in the first place. Just as the name implies, it is meant to provide a flawless base that blends naturally with the rest of your skin, such as on your neck, so that the rest of your makeup can stand out.

A pristine "backdrop" makes all the difference in the other types of cosmetics you apply to your face, so it's important to get this part right, and you won't believe the difference it makes in the look of your complexion when you start to get it down to a science. This is why makeup artists hone in their skills on this one important aspect of applying makeup so intensely, it can make or break a whole look if it's not done correctly or the wrong types of makeup are used.

So, let's talk first about how you should prep your skin for applying your "base". No matter what the season, you're always going to want to moisturize your face to a point that almost may seem excessive, so that your foundation has a base on which to lay correctly. If you don't moisturize adequately, your foundation tends to look less natural and can almost look caked on, since the skin may try to soak it in more since it has not been properly moisturized.

When I first started using this tactic, I did almost feel as if I was applying too much moisturizer, however, I noticed instantly how my foundation didn't seem to crack or lay in my creases or lines as much, and how it seemed to flow more seamlessly and naturally. Try just doubling what you normally do, but make sure you let it sink in completely before you apply your makeup.

If your skin feels tight at all after it has sunken in, then reapply more moisturizer and wait for it to completely dry again. Not only does this provide a great base, but it also imparts a lovely glow and deeply hydrated look to the skin, and it will last all day long. If you have naturally oily skin, just be sure to use an oil free product, but still don't hesitate to load it on, even oily skin needs moisture, especially for makeup application.

OK, now that we've gotten this important first step out of the way, let's talk about product selection and the tools you'll need to apply it correctly. Choosing a foundation that matches your skin tone closely is paramount. If you choose one that is too dark or too light, your facial skin will mismatch the skin on your neck, and we all don't want that because we know it looks tacky.

If you're not sure how to pick a color or you're not comfortable, I'd suggest maybe visiting a makeup counter the first time to have a professional assist you in color selection, as well as skin type selection. You will want to also make sure you choose the right one based on skin type. For those with oily skin, choose an oil free formula, for those with more mature skin, there are some great formulas that impart extra hydration or ingredients that ensure the makeup does not settle in creases and amplify wrinkles.

After you've had the assistance of a professional, you can then try your own hand at matching that color in a drug store and trying your hand at finding the right one on your own, for probably less money than in a department store. I have a few favorites that you can buy at a drugstore that work very well for coverage and endurance.

You want to make sure you get one that is thick enough that it covers well. I prefer liquid foundation, by the way. I've found that other foundations such as powder or whipped tend to not apply as well, but that's just my personal preference. Of course, if you're looking for minimal, bare coverage for the summer, the mineral powders are the way to go though.

Next, you need to make sure you choose the right application tool. You can choose either a professional grade foundation brush, which is a large headed, soft brush that is usually colored darker at the tips. You can also try a sponge. I never use my fingers, I use either a good sponge or a brush, since they tend to be more precise in their coverage.

If you use a sponge, make sure you run it under water before you put your foundation on it. This helps prevent your sponge from soaking up too much product and wasting it, and it also helps to give the skin a dewy, glowing look. I never buy cheap sponges, because they usually are too porous. Look for denser sponges. You can read reviews online if you're not sure which ones work better.

You will want to use an amount about the size of a dime, maybe a bit smaller, depending on the level of coverage. I like to mix my foundation with a glow enhancing, tinted moisturizer, but that's personal preference. It tends to give a more shear look that reflects light better. If you are using a brush, you will want to put the foundation on the back of your hand and dip the brush in as you go.

With a sponge, you will want to sort of pat each area with the foundation first, starting with the forehead, then the cheeks, and then the chin and under the eyes. When you have a little bit everywhere, go over it with the sponge, blending it well into the entire face, making sure you get all the way into the hair line. You can also blend it right down into the neck area, ensuring that you have a blended, even look.

With a brush, follow the same principal, patting each area with a dot of foundation, but you will want to sort of use a quick, pulling back movement and gentle fast patting movement called stippling with the brush. You may find that brushes offer a bit more of a complete coverage, so I usually reserve these for night time when I feel like I can get away with a more "made up" look. When you get good at the brush application, you'll find that it really is easy and it works well under the eyes and in areas where you are looking to camouflage large pores.
